Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is set to represent Poland in a crucial hybrid meeting of the ‘coalition of the willing’ today, Thursday, as a contentious White House visit by President Karol Nawrocki continues to fuel an escalating political crisis between the nation’s top leaders. The meeting, which occurred yesterday, Wednesday, between President Nawrocki and former US President Donald Trump, has exacerbated an already fragile relationship, highlighting stark divisions in Poland’s foreign policy approach.

Nawrocki’s visit to Washington, his first overseas trip since taking office last month, was overshadowed by internal strife. The conservative nationalist president, who secured Trump’s endorsement during his ‘Poland first’ campaign, held talks focused primarily on security issues, including Poland’s stance on the Ukraine war and his recent discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. His chief foreign policy adviser, Marcin Przydacz, stressed Poland’s desire for strong relations with the US, particularly given its status as NATO’s top spender.

However, the visit has drawn sharp criticism from Tusk’s pro-European government. Tensions flared significantly after Nawrocki reportedly sidelined Tusk from a key leaders’ phone call with Trump prior to the Alaska summit, a role traditionally held by the Prime Minister. This move, coupled with Poland’s subsequent absence from a high-level Zelenskyy-Trump meeting, underscored Nawrocki’s intent to pursue an independent foreign policy, often at odds with the government’s direction.

Adding to the discord, Nawrocki’s delegation to the White House did not include any government officials, breaking with established tradition. A leaked memo outlining the government’s advice for the president was publicly dismissed by presidential aides as ‘impertinent’. The internal divisions come at a critical time, potentially undermining Poland’s influential role in shaping Europe’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, particularly as it remains a vital logistics hub for aid and a haven for Ukrainian refugees.

As Tusk steps into today’s meeting, the ongoing political battle risks weakening Poland’s international standing and its ability to present a unified front on crucial regional and global issues.
