Dolby has unveiled Dolby Vision 2, the next evolution of its High Dynamic Range (HDR) format, designed to go beyond traditional tone and brightness optimization. This advanced version introduces ‘Content Intelligence’ tools, leveraging AI to automatically fine-tune TV picture settings based on content, viewing environment, and display device, building upon existing Dolby Vision IQ capabilities.

Key enhancements include ‘Precision Black’ for improved clarity in dark scenes while maintaining artistic intent, and an updated ‘Light Sense’ feature that adapts picture quality using ambient light detection and source material data. Dolby Vision 2 also supports bi-directional tone mapping, enabling high-performance TVs to achieve superior brightness, sharper contrast, and richer colors by giving content creators greater control over display capabilities.

Addressing the contentious ‘soap opera effect’ of motion smoothing, Dolby Vision 2 introduces ‘Authentic Motion.’ This new feature is touted as the first ‘creative driven motion control tool,’ offering shot-by-shot control to reduce unwanted judder while preserving a cinematic aesthetic. Initial implementations of Dolby Vision 2 will appear in Hisense TVs, powered by MediaTek’s Pentonic 800 chip. While existing Dolby Vision content remains compatible, only Dolby Vision 2-capable displays will utilize the new metadata. The new standard will also differentiate between ‘Dolby Vision 2 Max’ for premium features on top-tier TVs and a standard ‘Dolby Vision 2’ label for mainstream devices offering improved picture quality.
