Suspect Arrested in Assassination of Ukrainian Politician Andriy Parubiy, Zelenskyy Confirms

Ukrainian authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of prominent pro-Western politician and former parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the arrest on Sunday, following the assassination of Parubiy in Lviv on Saturday.
According to President Zelenskyy’s statement on X, a person was taken into custody shortly after the shooting. While initial statements have been made by the suspect, no further details regarding their identity or a potential motive for the killing have been released to the public. Zelenskyy stated, “The necessary investigative actions are ongoing. I have instructed that the available information be presented to the public.”
Andriy Parubiy, 54, was a significant figure in Ukrainian politics. He represented the Lviv region and played a key role in the 2004 Orange Revolution and led self-defense units during the 2014 Maidan protests, which led to the ousting of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych. Parubiy served as parliament speaker from 2016 to 2019.
Local media reports, citing CBS News partner BBC News, indicated that Parubiy was shot multiple times by an assailant disguised as a courier on an e-bike. President Zelenskyy strongly condemned the incident as a “horrific murder” and assured that “all necessary forces and means” would be deployed for a thorough investigation.
