Maclean Brothers Shatter Pacific Rowing Record, Arrive in Australia After Epic 139-Day Journey

In a monumental feat of endurance and determination, three Scottish brothers, Ewan, Jamie, and Lachlan Maclean, made history yesterday, Saturday, August 30, 2025, by setting a new world record for the fastest unsupported row across the Pacific Ocean. The trio completed their grueling 9,000-mile journey from Peru to Cairns, Australia, in an astonishing 139 days.
Arriving at the Cairns Marlin Marina to a jubilant crowd of over 50 family members, supporters, and fans, including their mother Sheila, the brothers celebrated their incredible achievement. Their arrival was marked by the distinct sound of bagpipes and the waving of Scottish, Australian, and United Kingdom flags, following a humorous radio call from Ewan asking, “Do you have pizza and beer? I repeat, do you have pizza and beer? Over.”
The journey, which saw them become the first team to complete the full South America to Australia crossing, was fraught with challenges. They battled violent storms – one of which swept Lachlan overboard – endured seasickness, and faced injuries, pushing their physical and mental limits. “The journey was the hardest thing he had ever done,” eldest brother Ewan, 33, remarked, adding he wouldn’t have attempted it without his siblings. Jamie, 31, shared a moment of dire concern, saying, “We seriously thought we might run out of food.”
Beyond their record-breaking row, the Maclean brothers have been on a significant fundraising mission. They have so far raised over £700,000 ($945,690) towards a £1 million ($1,350,450) target for clean water projects. Their charity, the Maclean Foundation, aims to provide clean water to 40,000 people in Madagascar, a cause they plan to continue supporting.
This remarkable achievement shatters the previous record of 160 days, set by Russian solo rower Fyodor Konyukhov in 2014, solidifying the Maclean brothers’ place in the annals of ocean exploration and inspiring many with their resilience and philanthropic spirit.
