Julia Roberts was visibly emotional as her new drama, “After the Hunt,” premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Friday night, receiving a six-minute standing ovation. The Amazon MGM Studios release, directed by Luca Guadagnino, saw Roberts wiping away tears, blowing kisses, and embracing co-stars Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield.

The film, which features Roberts as an Ivy League professor grappling with her past after a colleague (Andrew Garfield) is accused of misconduct, has already ignited debate. An earlier press conference on Friday saw Guadagnino and Roberts addressing pointed questions about the film’s portrayal of the #MeToo movement and cancel culture.

Roberts firmly defended the movie, stating that it aims to provoke conversation rather than stoke controversy. “We’re not making statements; we are portraying these people in this moment in time,” she explained, emphasizing the film’s role in encouraging dialogue. “If making this movie does anything, getting everybody to talk to each other is the most exciting thing that I think we could accomplish.”

“After the Hunt,” also starring Michael Stuhlbarg and Chloë Sevigny, is set for a limited theatrical release on October 10 before expanding nationwide on October 17.
