U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) is reportedly planning to announce in September that she will not seek a third term in the 2026 election, according to sources familiar with her plans. This decision by Iowa’s first woman elected to Congress creates a significant open seat, potentially sending ripple effects through the state’s political landscape and offering Democrats a key pickup opportunity.

Sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity on Friday to preview the announcement, indicate Ernst will officially opt out of the race next month. Her departure follows Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds’ earlier decision not to run for re-election, further shaking up the state’s political scene and prompting widespread speculation among Republican officials considering bids for higher office.

Ernst, a former Army National Guard member and Iraq War combat veteran, was first elected to the Senate in 2014. Her expected retirement opens up a race that is already attracting attention from potential candidates. On the Republican side, third-term Rep. Ashley Hinson is widely seen as a likely contender. Several Democrats are also vying for the party’s nomination, including state Sen. Zach Wahls, state Rep. Josh Turek, Des Moines School Board chair Jackie Norris, and former chamber of commerce president Nathan Sage.

The upcoming 2026 election will mark the first time since 2014 that Iowa’s Senate seat will be without an incumbent, setting the stage for a potentially highly competitive and closely watched contest.
