Israel’s military has launched the “initial stages” of a major offensive aimed at seizing Gaza City, declaring the Palestinian territory’s largest population center a “dangerous combat zone.” The intensified operation, which saw the suspension of daily humanitarian pauses, comes as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the recovery of two hostage bodies, including that of Ilan Weiss, who was abducted during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government pressed ahead with the planned expansion of the war against Hamas despite weeks of international condemnation and an expanded call-up of 60,000 Israeli military reservists. Nations including France, Britain, Canada, and Australia have criticized the sweeping offensive and recently announced their recognition of a Palestinian state.

The military escalation has also fueled significant internal dissent, with tens of thousands of Israeli citizens protesting and demanding a deal to secure the release of the approximately 50 remaining hostages, 20 of whom are believed to be alive. Hostage families remain divided, with some fearing for the lives of their loved ones amidst increased military operations, while others believe more pressure is needed to dismantle Hamas.

On Friday, images on social media showed large explosions near Gaza City, which serves as a refuge for hundreds of thousands of displaced people and houses critical infrastructure. The IDF had previously warned residents to evacuate the city, deeming it “inevitable.” As the conflict approaches its second full year, international pressure continues to mount on Netanyahu’s government to end the fighting and allow greater humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave, where the Hamas-run Ministry of Health reports 63,025 casualties.
