Iowa Democrats have delivered a significant blow to the Republican Party’s dominance, successfully flipping a state Senate seat in a recent special election and thereby dismantling the GOP’s supermajority. The victory marks a crucial shift in the state’s political landscape.

In the Sioux City-area district, Democrat Catelin Drey secured a decisive win, garnering 55% of the vote against Republican opponent Christopher Prosch’s 44%, according to unofficial results. This outcome shifts the balance of power in the Iowa Senate to 17 Democrats against 33 Republicans, effectively breaking the two-thirds supermajority previously held by the GOP.

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin lauded Drey’s triumph, particularly noting the district’s previous support for Donald Trump in last year’s presidential election. “Iowans are seeing Republicans for who they are: self-serving liars who will throw their constituents under the bus to rubber stamp Donald Trump’s disastrous agenda — and they’re ready for change,” Martin stated. He added, “Make no mistake: when Democrats organize everywhere, we win everywhere, and today is no exception.”

The special election was called by Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds following the passing of Republican Sen. Rocky De Witt in June, who was initially elected in 2022. This win for Democrats follows a broader trend of strong performances in special elections throughout this year, building on momentum observed after Vice President Kamala Harris’s defeat to Trump last year. Another notable victory earlier this year saw Democrat Mike Zimmer flip a state Senate seat in January.
