A federal judge in Washington D.C. has vehemently dismissed a weapons case, labeling the underlying search as “without a doubt the most illegal search I’ve ever seen in my life.” U.S. Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui expressed his outrage from the bench, stating he was “absolutely flabbergasted” by the incident.

The dismissal comes as the nation’s capital faces heightened scrutiny, with President Trump having recently ordered National Guard and federal law enforcement to “clean up” the city and crack down on crime. A new executive order also aims to ensure more D.C. arrests result in federal charges and pretrial detention.

The case involved Torez Riley, a Black man, who the judge suggested was singled out due to his race and a heavy backpack. Law enforcement had claimed to find two weapons in his crossbody bag. The U.S. Attorney’s Office moved to dismiss the case seven days after lodging charges, with a Department of Justice spokesperson indicating newly confirmed U.S. Attorney for D.C., Jeanine Pirro, acted after reviewing body camera footage.

Judge Faruqui criticized the U.S. Attorney’s Office, stating, “We don’t just charge people criminally and then say, ‘Oops, my bad.'” However, Pirro pushed back, accusing the judge of a “long history of bending over backwards to release dangerous felons.” The judge also revealed an unusual increase in cases involving weekend arrests and other judges moving to suppress search warrants, highlighting the strain on the court system and the potential for overreach in the current federal push.
