Typhoon Kajiki Leaves Trail of Disruption in Vietnam and China, Aftermath Unfolds

Typhoon Kajiki, which made landfall on Sunday, has prompted massive evacuations and widespread disruption across central Vietnam and China’s Hainan island. Authorities in Vietnam moved over 500,000 residents from four coastal provinces, including Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri, Hue, and Danang, as the storm approached with windspeeds reaching 175 kilometers per hour.
Vietnamese carriers, including Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet, canceled flights in anticipation of severe weather conditions, which included heavy rains and significant flooding. The coastal city of Vinh experienced heavy rainfall overnight, leading to the closure of many businesses.
In China, Typhoon Kajiki also impacted Hainan island, where more than 20,000 people were evacuated. The popular resort city of Sanya shut down all tourist attractions, schools, and offices, with public transportation suspended and residents urged to stay indoors. Strong winds were also reported in parts of Guangdong province. The full extent of the typhoon’s damage and the ongoing recovery efforts are now becoming clear.
