Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Salvadoran migrant whose case drew national attention due to a mistaken Trump-era deportation, faces a new and urgent threat of deportation to Uganda as early as next week. This development comes as his attorneys accuse federal authorities of coercion after Garcia rejected a plea deal that would have sent him to Costa Rica.

Garcia was released from federal custody on Friday but was ordered to report to Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody in Baltimore today, Monday, August 25. His lawyers revealed that federal prosecutors had offered a deal for Garcia to plead guilty to human smuggling charges in exchange for deportation to Costa Rica, where the government of Costa Rica confirmed it would grant him refugee status and not seek further detention or deportation to El Salvador.

However, after Garcia declined to extend his stay in jail and was released to his family in Maryland, government attorneys notified him of a potential deportation to Uganda, which could occur as soon as 72 hours from now (excluding weekends). Garcia’s legal team has strongly condemned these actions, labeling them as a “vindictive” and “last-ditch effort to forestall” his release. They allege that the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security are “working in lockstep to coerce” Garcia into accepting a guilty plea and have asked for the case to be dismissed.

Garcia, a Maryland resident and father of three, was mistakenly deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration in March 2025 and imprisoned there, despite having lived in the U.S. since 2005. He returned to the U.S. in June to face federal human smuggling charges stemming from a 2022 incident, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
