Illinois leaders, including Governor JB Pritzker and Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton, have strongly condemned a report from The Washington Post indicating that then-President Donald Trump was preparing to deploy federal troops to Chicago. The report, which emerged on a Saturday, suggested the Pentagon had been planning a military deployment for weeks, potentially involving thousands of National Guard members as soon as the following month.

Lt. Governor Stratton denounced the move, stating it proved Trump’s willingness to create chaos for political power. She highlighted declining crime rates in Chicago and argued there was no rationale for the decision other than to distract from his agenda. Governor Pritzker emphasized that the state had received no requests for assistance from the federal government and asserted there was no emergency warranting federal intervention. He accused Trump of attempting to manufacture a crisis and politicize military personnel.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also addressed the situation, responding to Trump’s earlier remarks that Chicago would likely be the next target for his crime crackdown efforts, similar to actions taken in Washington, D.C. Johnson called Trump’s approach “uncoordinated, uncalled for, and unsound.” City leaders widely viewed the potential deployment as a political stunt, pointing to local crime data that showed overall crime, violent crime, and property crimes were all down year-to-date. The Mayor’s legal team was reportedly preparing for potential challenges.
