Five people were killed and dozens more sustained injuries yesterday, Friday, August 22, in a devastating bus rollover crash on the New York Thruway in Pembroke. State Police confirmed the fatalities and reported that 49 passengers were transported to area hospitals for treatment following the incident.

The tour bus, operated by M&Y Tour Inc., was en route from Niagara Falls to New York City when it lost control around 12:30 p.m. in Genesee County, approximately 30 miles east of Buffalo. Major Andre J. Ray, the state police commander overseeing the Thruway, indicated that driver distraction was a factor, though specific details have not yet been released.

Of the 54 people on board, ranging in age from 1 to 74, nearly all suffered some form of injury. Medical facilities in Rochester and Buffalo responded, with Erie County Medical Center receiving 24 patients, including two undergoing surgery and two in trauma ICU as of yesterday evening. The hospital called in translation specialists to assist with the diverse group of passengers, many of whom were of Indian, Chinese, or Filipino ethnicity.

The crash caused significant disruption, shutting down the Thruway in both directions for hours, with westbound lanes reopening around 5 p.m. yesterday. Authorities have established a Family Assistance Center at the Amherst Senior Center in Buffalo for victims and their families. The State Police are actively seeking witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage, urging them to contact SP Batavia.
