Google Docs has officially launched a new AI-powered feature that enables users to generate audio versions of their documents. This innovative ‘read aloud’ capability, powered by Gemini, is designed to enhance accessibility and convenience for a wide range of users.

The new functionality allows for extensive customization, including different voices and playback speeds, providing a tailored listening experience. Crucially, the feature extends beyond the document creator; any user with access to a shared document can utilize it by navigating to the Tools dropdown menu and selecting ‘Audio > Listen to this tab.’ Additionally, authors can embed a customizable audio button directly into their documents via ‘Insert > Audio,’ offering one-click access for readers.

While Google had previously outlined plans for AI-driven audio features, this specific ‘read aloud’ tool offers a more immediate and practical application for daily document consumption. Currently, audio generation is available exclusively for English documents and is supported on desktop devices. The rollout primarily targets Workspace users with business, enterprise, or education plans, alongside those subscribed to AI Pro and Ultra.
