With the current date of August 20, 2025, tech enthusiasts are already looking ahead to Apple’s next generation of MacBook Pro. While past patterns suggested an annual October refresh, industry whispers indicate a shift, with the M5 MacBook Pro now anticipated for an early 2026 launch. This raises a critical question for prospective buyers: is it wise to hold out for the M5?

Expectations for the M5 MacBook Pro suggest a modest evolution rather than a revolution. Users can anticipate the familiar 14-inch and 16-inch miniLED displays, maintaining the established design language. The significant change lies within, as it will house Apple’s latest M5 Apple Silicon, likely leveraging TSMC’s third-generation 3nm N3P process. This upgrade is projected to deliver performance gains of approximately 10-20% over the current M4 chip.

One notable hardware addition that could differentiate the M5 is Wi-Fi 7 support. Following its introduction with the iPhone 16 lineup last fall, Wi-Fi 7 has yet to make its way to the Mac. The M5 MacBook Pro presents a strong opportunity for this high-speed wireless standard to finally arrive on Apple’s professional laptops.

However, the M5 is shaping up to be a relatively light refresh, especially when compared to the substantial enhancements seen with last year’s M4 MacBook Pro. The M4 brought significant upgrades including Thunderbolt 5, a nano texture display option, an improved 12MP Center Stage webcam, brighter displays, and a much-enhanced base model. Given these recent improvements, the M4 14-inch MacBook Pro, which has recently seen sale prices as low as $1299, remains a highly compelling option for those upgrading from older M1 or M2 models.

Perhaps the most compelling reason to potentially bypass the M5 altogether is the rumored M6 MacBook Pro. This model is reportedly poised for a major ‘overhaul,’ featuring a new OLED display and a thinner design. With the M5 expected in Q1 2026 and the M6 following in Q4 2026, the strategic choice for many may be to either secure an M4 now if immediate needs dictate, or to exercise patience and wait for the more transformative M6, unless Wi-Fi 7 is an absolute must-have feature.
