White House Confirms Smithsonian Review Amid Trump’s ‘Woke’ Criticism

President Donald Trump confirmed Tuesday that the White House is actively reviewing the Smithsonian museums, expressing significant dissatisfaction with their current depiction of American history, particularly regarding slavery.
In a statement on his social media platform, Trump criticized the Smithsonian as “OUT OF CONTROL,” asserting it excessively focuses on negative aspects like slavery while neglecting “Success” and “Brightness.” He declared, “We are not going to allow this to happen,” and stated he has instructed his attorneys to initiate a process similar to one applied to colleges and universities, aiming to combat “WOKE” ideologies which he claims are making the country “BROKE.”
This confirmation follows an ABC News report last week detailing the White House’s plans for a broad review of the Smithsonian Institution’s exhibitions and operations, ahead of America’s 250th anniversary next year. A letter sent to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch indicated the administration’s desire for the museums to “reflect the unity, progress, and enduring values that define the American story.”
The review reportedly targets eight museums, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Museum of American History. This initiative builds on an executive order signed by Trump in March, directing Vice President JD Vance and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to “remove improper ideology” from all Smithsonian areas.
The Smithsonian has declined to comment on the matter. Notably, Trump had a different public stance during a 2017 visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, where he praised the museum and its director, Lonnie Bunch, calling it “incredible” and a “meaningful reminder of why we have to fight bigotry, intolerance and hatred.”
