A 63-year-old American tourist sustained severe injuries following a shark attack while spearfishing in the Bahamas this past Sunday. Local authorities confirmed the incident, which occurred shortly after 1 p.m. near Big Grand Cay on the island of Abaco.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force reported the man was immediately taken to a local clinic for initial medical assistance before being airlifted to the United States for further specialized treatment. Details regarding his current condition and the circumstances leading to the attack remain limited.

The Bahamas, while a popular tourist destination, has one of the world’s higher rates of shark encounters, though such incidents remain statistically rare. According to the International Shark Attack File, there have been 34 confirmed attacks in the region over the last 400 years, placing it ninth globally for documented encounters.

This incident follows other recent shark-related events in the Bahamas, including two American tourists injured in February during an apparent shark attack near Bimini Bay, and a fatal attack on a Boston woman while paddleboarding in December 2023. In January 2024, a 10-year-old Maryland boy also sustained a bite during a shark tank expedition at another Bahamian resort.
