Biwin’s Tiny ‘Mini SSD’ Poised to Revolutionize Gaming Handheld Storage

A breakthrough in portable storage is set to redefine performance for gaming handhelds. Chinese company Biwin has developed the ‘Mini SSD,’ an incredibly compact drive measuring just 15 by 17 mm, promising read speeds of up to 3,700MB per second via a two-lane PCI Express 4.0 interface.
This innovation comes as the demand for high-speed, removable storage intensifies, particularly following Nintendo’s adoption of the microSD Express standard for its new Switch 2 console. While microSD Express offers similar peak speeds, most current cards fall short, often topping out around 900MB per second. Biwin’s Mini SSD, originally showcased in March, leverages LGA packaging to integrate NAND chips and an SSD controller into its diminutive form, inserting into devices much like a SIM card.
The technology is already gaining traction, with new AMD-based gaming portables like the GPD Win 5 and OneXPlayer Super X advertising support for the Mini SSD. Available in capacities ranging from 500GB to 2TB, this ultra-fast, removable storage solution could significantly enhance the gaming experience on portable devices, bringing performance closer to that of internal SSDs found in consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
