Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) asserted on Tuesday that Hamas has been significantly inflating the reported number of Palestinians dying from malnutrition in Gaza. A comprehensive review conducted by Israeli security officials and medical experts concludes that the terror group is engaged in an “orchestrated campaign” to discredit Israel and achieve political objectives.

The review found a substantial discrepancy between the death tolls reported by Hamas’s health ministry and the cases with full identifying details. While Hamas reported 66 deaths by June 2025 and then a surge to over 133 in July 2025, COGAT noted a lack of individual identities for the July figures, a departure from past practices. An in-depth analysis of specific cases published by Hamas revealed that most individuals allegedly dying from malnutrition had pre-existing medical conditions that led to the deterioration of their health, rather than their nutritional status. Some had even received medical treatment in Israel prior to the conflict.

COGAT highlighted cases such as four-year-old Abdullah Hani Muhammad Abu Zarqa, claimed to be suffering from starvation, who was found to have a genetic disease causing vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and 27-year-old Karam Khaled Mustafa al-Jamal, reported to have died from starvation, who suffered from muscular dystrophy since childhood. These cases, COGAT stated, do not represent the general population’s condition but rather selectively present extreme instances involving pre-existing illnesses.

The Israeli defense body concluded that, based on photographic evidence and intelligence, there are no signs of widespread malnutrition among the Gaza population. COGAT accused Hamas of cynically exploiting tragic images for a false and timed propaganda campaign. Israel maintains it is working to improve humanitarian response in Gaza, despite international pressure and ongoing disputes with the UN regarding aid distribution logistics and figures.
