A powerful magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Turkey’s northwestern province of Balikesir on Sunday, resulting in at least one confirmed fatality and leaving 29 people injured. The seismic event caused more than a dozen buildings to collapse, primarily derelict structures, alongside two mosque minarets.

The epicenter of the quake was identified in the town of Sindirgi, with its tremors felt as far as Istanbul, approximately 200 kilometers (125 miles) to the north. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that an elderly woman died shortly after being rescued from the debris of a collapsed building in Sindirgi. Rescue operations are ongoing, with teams actively listening for signs of life amidst the rubble.

Officials reported that none of the injured are in serious condition. Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency has urged citizens to avoid entering damaged buildings, cautioning about several aftershocks, including one measuring 4.6. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan extended his wishes for a speedy recovery to all affected citizens, stating, “May God protect our country from any kind of disaster.”

Turkey is situated on major fault lines, making earthquakes a frequent occurrence. The nation is still recovering from a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2023 that claimed over 53,000 lives.
