Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace Deal: Global Reactions to Historic US-Brokered Agreement

A landmark peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, brokered by the United States and signed in Washington, has been met with widespread international enthusiasm. The deal, inked by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in the presence of US President Donald Trump, aims to bring an end to decades of conflict, particularly centered around the disputed Karabakh region.
Neighboring countries and international institutions have largely welcomed the accord. Russia, along with Georgia’s opposition and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, lauded the agreement, with Kobakhidze hailing it as the dawn of a new era of stability and economic development for the region. The European Union and the United Nations have also praised the deal as a crucial step towards achieving lasting peace.
The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs emphasized that the agreement represents a decisive step towards the full normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, based on mutual recognition of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and inviolability of borders, in line with the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration.
However, the agreement’s proposed corridor in the Caucasus has drawn concern from Iran, which has stated its intention to block it, citing potential negative consequences from foreign intervention near its borders. This peace deal follows Azerbaijan’s successful military campaign in September 2023, which saw it reclaim full control of the Karabakh region.
