Deadly Weekend Storms Batter Nebraska and Midwest, Leaving One Dead and Hundreds Displaced
Violent storms swept through eastern Nebraska and parts of the Midwest this weekend, resulting in at least one fatality, one serious injury, and widespread damage, including the displacement of hundreds of prison inmates. The severe weather brought gusts exceeding 80 mph, toppling trees, damaging structures, and causing power outages across the region.
In eastern Nebraska, a person was killed and another critically injured early Saturday morning when their vehicle was crushed by a large cottonwood tree at Two Rivers State Park. First responders from the Waterloo Volunteer Fire Department spent 90 minutes extracting the trapped man, who was then transported to an Omaha hospital with life-threatening injuries. The storms caused extensive damage throughout eastern Nebraska, tearing the roof off a warehouse in Blair and leaving thousands without power.
Further impacting the state, two housing units at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln sustained damage, forcing the relocation of 387 prisoners. Fortunately, correctional officials reported no injuries to staff or inmates. Similar strong storms also affected eastern Wisconsin, with gusts of 60 mph recorded in the Door Peninsula.
Forecasters warn that more severe weather is possible across the nation’s midsection through Sunday, with affected areas stretching from Colorado across Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
