Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ignited a firestorm of controversy after reposting and endorsing a video featuring a Christian nationalist pastor, Doug Wilson, who advocates for women to be barred from voting. The video, originally an interview with CNN, also shows Pastor Wilson defending previous comments that suggested “mutual affection” existed between slaves and their masters, and calling for the recriminalization of sodomy, a practice invalidated by the Supreme Court in 2003.

Hegseth shared the interview on platform X (formerly Twitter), adding the phrase, “All of Christ for All of Life.” Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed Hegseth’s affiliation with Wilson’s Congregation of Reformed Evangelical Churches, stating, “The Secretary very much appreciates many of Mr. Wilson’s writings and teachings.”

The controversy extends beyond the voting rights of women, with Wilson’s church also promoting the idea of household voting where the husband casts the family’s ballot. Experts, such as sociology professor Andrew Whitehead, warn that a high-ranking government official sharing such extreme views is highly consequential, aiming to normalize and eventually enforce these beliefs across the nation. Hegseth’s public endorsement of these divisive ideologies raises significant concerns about the influence of such figures in positions of power.
