Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated a formal investigation into Beto O’Rourke’s political organization, Powered by People. The probe centers on allegations that the group illegally funded Texas Democrats who traveled out of state, attempting to block the passage of new Republican-favored congressional maps by depriving the House of a quorum.
Paxton, in a press release, accused Powered by People of operating a “financial influence scheme” designed to convince Democrats to leave the state. He vowed to investigate “any Democrat coward breaking the law by taking a Beto Bribe,” utilizing a “request to examine” statute to demand documents and communications from the organization.
In response, O’Rourke quickly dismissed the investigation, stating, “The guy impeached for bribery is going after the folks trying to stop the theft of five Congressional seats,” while encouraging donations to his group.
This investigation follows The Texas Tribune’s reporting on Powered by People’s financial role in the Democrats’ quorum-breaking operation. It marks the latest development in a broader Republican effort to compel the Democrats’ return, with Governor Greg Abbott, House Speaker Dustin Burrows, and Senator John Cornyn also taking actions against the absent lawmakers.
