Washington — The Justice Department has officially published a list identifying 35 “sanctuary” jurisdictions, signaling an aggressive new phase in its efforts to enforce federal immigration laws. The comprehensive list targets states, counties, and cities that limit local cooperation with federal immigration agents, with the Department vowing to initiate further lawsuits.

Attorney General Pam Bondi released a strong statement alongside the publication, asserting, “Sanctuary policies impede law enforcement and put American citizens at risk by design. The Department of Justice will continue bringing litigation against sanctuary jurisdictions and work closely with the Department of Homeland Security to eradicate these harmful policies around the country.”

The newly released list encompasses a wide range of entities, including 12 states—California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington—along with the District of Columbia. Additionally, specific local governments such as Baltimore County, Maryland; Cook County, Illinois; San Diego County, California; San Francisco County, California; and 18 cities stretching from Seattle to Philadelphia are named.

This move follows President Trump’s executive order signed in April, which mandated the Justice Department to identify and publish a list of jurisdictions deemed to be obstructing federal immigration enforcement. The order also directed the Department to pursue all necessary legal remedies against non-compliant entities. The Justice Department has already escalated its enforcement actions in recent months, notably suing New York City in July over its sanctuary city laws. The issue has also been a focal point for Republicans in Congress, who have held contentious hearings questioning Democratic officials on their jurisdictions’ policies.
