The U.S. National Park Service has announced plans to restore and reinstall the controversial statue of Confederate military officer Albert Pike in Washington, D.C. This decision comes five years after protesters toppled the monument during the widespread anti-racism demonstrations of 2020. The NPS aims to complete the re-installation by October, following repairs to the statue’s damaged stone, mortar joints, and mounting elements.

In a statement, the NPS justified the move by citing federal responsibilities under historic preservation law, as well as directives aimed at beautifying the nation’s capital and reinstating pre-existing statues. This initiative reignites a fierce debate over Confederate symbols, with proponents arguing they represent history and heritage, while opponents condemn them as racist emblems of America’s legacy of slavery.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism from local representatives. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, who represents Washington, D.C., vehemently opposed the reinstallation, stating she would reintroduce legislation to permanently remove the statue and authorize its donation to a museum or other entity. Norton characterized the move as “odd and indefensible” and “morally objectionable,” highlighting Pike’s dishonorable service as a Confederate officer, including allegations of misappropriated funds and war crimes.

Albert Pike, originally from Massachusetts, was a prominent figure in the Confederacy who later became a leader in the Freemasons, the group responsible for erecting his statue in 1901. His legacy remains contentious, marked by his Confederate ties and disputed allegations of involvement with the Ku Klux Klan.
