The US IT job market is facing a far more severe downturn than previously understood, following significant downward revisions to May and June’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data and a reported 10,300 IT job losses in July.

According to the latest revised BLS figures, the IT job market has shrunk by a staggering 26,500 jobs year-to-date in 2025. This alarming figure comes after the BLS dramatically revised May’s job additions down by 125,000 and June’s by 133,000 across all sectors, revealing that overall job growth was significantly overstated.

The revisions have triggered sharp criticism from industry experts. IT management consulting firm Janco labeled the adjustments ‘unacceptable,’ citing potential issues with ‘poor data capture, poor infrastructure, incompetence, or political gerrymandering.’ Janco CEO Victor Janulaitis confirmed the IT sector’s year-to-date contraction, noting that July’s losses exacerbated an already grim picture.

In a rapid response to the controversial report, US President Trump fired BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer, alleging data manipulation. Amid this uncertainty, Janco reports the IT-sector unemployment rate now stands at 5.5 percent for July, significantly higher than the national rate of 4.2 percent.

While economic uncertainty continues to dampen IT hiring, some niche areas show resilience. Demand remains strong for roles in AI, LLMs, Blockchain, OmniCommerce technologies, and cybersecurity, with CompTIA noting particular growth in positions requiring AI competency rather than solely AI-exclusive roles. However, the overall outlook for IT professionals remains challenging, making a robust skill set crucial for securing employment.
