U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to an immediate ceasefire in the war in Ukraine, with a specific focus on halting attacks on energy and infrastructure. The breakthrough agreement, reached during a Tuesday call between the two leaders, aims to pave the way for a comprehensive peace deal within weeks.

Following a 90-minute discussion, President Trump announced on Truth Social that an “immediate Ceasefire on all Energy and Infrastructure” was agreed upon, with the understanding of quickly moving towards a “Complete Ceasefire and, ultimately, an END to this very horrible War between Russia and Ukraine.” The Kremlin corroborated this, stating Putin issued an immediate order to the Russian military to refrain from attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure for 30 days.

The White House confirmed the agreement, adding that Trump and Putin also consented to “technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace.” These crucial negotiations are set to commence immediately in the Middle East.

The development comes over three years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and follows President Trump’s previous remarks signaling potential U.S. willingness to compromise on land and assets to end the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously indicated Kyiv would agree to a 30-day ceasefire if Russia reciprocated.
