At least 21 people were killed in a horrific attack on church premises in eastern Congo on Sunday, attributed to Islamic State-backed rebels, a local civil society leader has confirmed.

The deadly assault, carried out by members of the Allied Democratic Force (ADF) — a rebel group with known ties to ISIS — occurred around 1 a.m. inside a Catholic church compound in Komanda. Beyond the fatalities, several houses and shops in the area were set ablaze, with at least three bodies found charred.

Dieudonne Duranthabo, a civil society coordinator in Komanda, reported that more than 21 individuals were shot dead both inside and outside the church, adding that searches for additional victims are ongoing. While Lt. Jules Ngongo, the Congolese army spokesperson in Ituri province, confirmed 10 deaths, local reports indicate a significantly higher number of casualties.

The ADF, which operates in the borderland between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, has a long history of conducting brutal attacks against civilian populations, spanning more than a decade.
