An American Airlines flight bound for Miami was forced to abort its takeoff at Denver International Airport on Saturday, leading to an emergency evacuation of all 173 passengers and six crew members via emergency slides. A fire was reported on the aircraft, a Boeing 737 Max 8, prompting a rapid response from first responders.

The incident, involving American Airlines flight 3023, occurred after the plane reportedly experienced a “possible landing gear incident” during its departure. Air traffic control audio revealed the pilot informing controllers they were “aborting on the runway,” followed by controllers noting “a lot of smoke” and “some flames.”

Passengers were quickly evacuated onto the runway and bused back to the terminal. One individual sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for evaluation. The Denver Fire Department confirmed they extinguished a fire on the plane.

Mark Tsurkis, a passenger on board, recounted hearing a “loud boom” as the plane began to accelerate, followed by the aircraft slowing down and passengers noticing smoke and fire. “It happened before the plane took off, so [the pilot] was able to slow down,” Tsurkis stated, expressing relief.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the incident. American Airlines has taken the affected aircraft out of service for inspection and arranged for passengers to continue their journey to Miami on a replacement flight later the same day.
