Dozens of people have been brutally killed in a recent attack by an Islamic State-affiliated group in north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Local officials confirm that among the dead were approximately 20 Christian worshippers attending a night vigil at a church in Komanda when Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) fighters launched their assault. The attack also saw nearby shops and businesses looted and set ablaze, with reports of some young people being abducted.

Casualty figures remain fluid as searches continue, with initial reports varying from over 21 confirmed dead by civil society coordinators, to 31 members of a church movement reported by a local priest. The UN-sponsored Radio Okapi website has cited a death toll of 43, while the army spokesperson confirmed 10 fatalities. The ADF, which originated in Uganda in the 1990s and is now based across the border in DR Congo, has become part of the Islamic State’s Central African Province. Despite Ugandan troop deployments in 2021 to combat the group, attacks on civilians persist in the mineral-rich Ituri province.
