Delta Air Lines is actively addressing persistent overcrowding in its popular Sky Clubs, even as the airline reports strong second-quarter 2025 earnings and maintains its status as America’s leading premium carrier. The airline, which saw a significant stock bump this summer, is implementing a multi-pronged strategy to enhance the premium experience for its growing affluent customer base.

Earlier this year, CEO Ed Bastian inaugurated a “new era in premium travel” with the launch of exclusive Delta One lounges, offering elevated amenities from fine dining to spa services. Concurrently, Delta continues to invest heavily in its existing Sky Clubs, with numerous expansions and new openings planned through late 2025 in major hubs like Atlanta, New York-JFK, Boston, and Los Angeles. Some of these new facilities will exceed 30,000 square feet, significantly increasing capacity.

Beyond physical expansion, Delta introduced stricter access policies in February 2025. These include capping annual visits for American Express cardholders at 15 and requiring substantial annual spending ($75,000+) for unlimited access. Basic Economy passengers are now permanently excluded, and lounge entry is restricted to within three hours of flight departure.

The airline’s efforts come after years of customer backlash stemming from the post-pandemic “revenge travel” boom, which overwhelmed lounge facilities. This challenge is seen by some as a microcosm of “elite overproduction,” where too many individuals now qualify for previously exclusive perks, leading to diluted experiences.

Despite ongoing peak-time crowding, Delta executives are optimistic, predicting that by 2026, most crowding issues will be resolved. The success of these initiatives is closely watched as Delta strives to restore the premium experience and exclusivity customers expect from its highly engaged SkyMiles program.
