Three Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detectives, identified as Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus, and William Osborn, were tragically killed in an explosion this past Friday at the Biscailuz Center Training Academy in East L.A. The lethal blast occurred as the highly trained members of the department’s arson explosives detail were moving ordnance.

Sheriff Robert Luna described the fallen lawmen as the “best of the best,” highlighting their combined 74 years of dedicated service to the community. Their deaths mark the agency’s deadliest incident in over 160 years, sending shock waves through the entire law enforcement community and leaving behind grieving families, including 16 children.

The explosion followed the detectives’ response on Thursday to assist the Santa Monica Police Department in removing explosives from an apartment complex on Bay Street. Authorities had evacuated residents from the Santa Monica building Friday afternoon while continuing to search for additional explosive material. A grenade was recovered at the site, prompting an ongoing investigation that could lead to negligent homicide charges against the individual responsible for building or storing the device.

The FBI, L.A. Police Department’s bomb squad, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are assisting in the probe into the cause of the explosion. Detectives Osborn, Lemus, and Kelley-Eklund were all seasoned investigators, known for their expertise in handling complex cases and mentoring colleagues. Their commitment to public safety and selfless service is being honored by the department and the community.
