Rivian R1 Quad-Motor Returns: Beastly Performance, ‘Kick Turn’ Feature, and NACS Charging Roll Out This Summer
Rivian is reintroducing its high-performance quad-motor R1T pickup and R1S SUV, with deliveries commencing this summer. The refreshed R1 platform variants boast over 1,000 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque, enabling a blistering 0-60 MPH acceleration in just 2.5 seconds for the R1T.
A standout new feature, the ‘Kick Turn,’ revives the long-anticipated ‘tank turn’ capability. This off-road maneuver allows the vehicle to effectively spin on its axis, proving highly useful for navigating tight trails and challenging terrain. Owners of previous quad-motor R1 models, however, will not receive this functionality due to hardware limitations.
The new R1 Quads are also among the first non-Tesla EVs to natively integrate the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, allowing seamless access to Tesla’s Supercharger network without an adapter. This significantly expands charging convenience, though a CCS adapter will be necessary for other networks until broader adoption.
Pricing for the R1T starts at $115,990 USD, while the R1S begins at $121,990 USD. Rivian is also reintroducing exclusive Launch Editions for both models. Additional new features include the RAD Tuner, allowing drivers to customize drive modes, and Launch Cam, which records performance metrics during rapid accelerations for sharing.
