Attorney Alleges Federal Agents Provoked Woman Before Chicago Shooting; Judge Orders Release

A federal agent allegedly taunted a woman, telling her to “Do something, bitch,” moments before shooting her in Chicago over the weekend, according to claims made by her attorney, Christopher Parente. The attorney asserts that body-camera footage supports this account, challenging the government’s narrative of the incident.
The shooting occurred Saturday morning in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood amidst heightened immigration enforcement operations by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents. Federal authorities allege that 30-year-old Marimar Martinez, along with 21-year-old Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, was part of a convoy that aggressively pursued and boxed in a CBP vehicle, leading to a collision.
Prosecutors claim an agent exited the vehicle after being struck, and Martinez then drove her car towards the agent, who subsequently fired approximately five shots. Martinez was later found at a repair shop with gunshot wounds and transported to a hospital.
Both Martinez and Ruiz were charged with assaulting and impeding a federal officer. However, during a detention hearing on Monday, Judge April Perry ordered their release pending trial, following Parente’s dispute of the government’s portrayal of events. Parente also highlighted that Martinez sustained seven bullet holes from five shots.
Federal officials from the Department of Homeland Security stated Martinez was armed with a semi-automatic weapon and had allegedly doxed agents online prior to the incident, although the criminal complaint does not mention her being armed. Assistant US Attorney Sean Hennessy described Martinez and Ruiz’s actions as “extremely dangerous and extremely reckless” during the hearing, adding that body-camera footage recorded agents saying, “We’re getting boxed in! We gotta get out of here! She’s going to make contact.” Hennessy also noted Martinez had a loaded gun in her purse but did not brandish it.
