New Jersey Storm Death Toll Rises to 3; Recovery Efforts Underway After Devastating Thunderstorms

Three individuals have been confirmed dead following powerful thunderstorms that swept across New Jersey on Thursday, leaving a trail of destruction, widespread power outages, and significant damage. As of Saturday, July 5, recovery and cleanup efforts are intensifying across affected areas, particularly in Plainfield and North Plainfield, which bore the brunt of the storm.
In Plainfield, two men, Rocco Sansone, 79, of North Plainfield, and Brian Ernesto Valladares, 25, of Plainfield, were tragically killed when a tree fell on their car on Myrtle Avenue. City officials expressed deep condolences, highlighting the storm’s sudden and devastating power. Plainfield Mayor Adrian Mapp declared a state of emergency, with over 80 downed trees reported and extensive damage to homes and vehicles. The city is now engaging private contractors to assist its Public Works Department in clearing debris and restoring access.
A third fatality was reported in North Plainfield, where a 44-year-old woman from Middlesex was killed when a large tree uprooted and fell onto her vehicle on Greenbrook Road. Emergency personnel faced challenges due to live electrical wires draped across the car, delaying rescue efforts.
The storm, which peaked between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday with estimated winds of 60 to 70 mph, caused more than 23,000 power outages statewide. PSE&G reported over 22,500 outages alone. Plainfield has established a mobile trailer at its Office of Emergency Management, serving as a charging station and information hub, while the city’s Senior Center remains open for residents seeking cooling and essential services. The American Red Cross is also on-site, providing emergency supplies to those impacted.
