As the Israel-Iran conflict intensifies, reaching a new peak with Israel’s most significant strikes on Iran in decades last Friday, global powers are closely watching the unfolding crisis. Speculation over a potential US military intervention has surged, prompting Washington to dispatch an aircraft carrier from the South China Sea and deploy a substantial number of fighter and tanker aircraft to the Middle East.

Amidst these escalating tensions, China has voiced “serious concerns” and called for restraint. On Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun urged nations with “special influence” over Israel – an apparent reference to the United States – to adopt an “objective and fair position” and play a “positive and constructive role” in easing the situation.

Beijing emphasized its opposition to any actions violating the UN Charter’s principles or infringing upon the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other nations. Guo Jiakun stressed that “further escalation of tensions in the Middle East is not in the interests of any party.”

Analysts suggest that despite its close ties with Tehran, China is likely to maintain a cautious stance, opting for a muted response due to limited leverage in the military aspect of the conflict. Beijing’s primary focus remains on safeguarding its significant economic interests in the region. Nonetheless, China has also indicated its willingness to act as a peace broker between Iran and Israel, underscoring its desire for regional stability.
