National Guard Deployment to Chicago Sparks Outcry Amid Border Patrol Shooting

President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of 300 National Guard troops to Chicago, a move met with strong objections from local leaders. The decision comes after weeks of threats from the Trump administration and follows a weekend incident where US Border Patrol personnel shot an armed woman during immigration protests in the city.
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson confirmed the deployment on Saturday, stating, “President Trump has authorised 300 national guardsmen to protect federal officers and assets.” She added that the President “will not turn a blind eye to the lawlessness plaguing American cities.”
Illinois Democratic Governor JB Pritzker, who announced Trump’s plan, expressed outrage. “It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will,” Pritzker stated, revealing that the Pentagon had issued an ultimatum: deploy state troops or federal forces would be sent. He criticized the move as a “manufactured performance” driven by control, not safety.
The Border Patrol shooting incident involved a woman, a US citizen, who was part of a group that rammed vehicles into those used by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The woman drove herself to the hospital, and no law enforcement officers were seriously injured. ICE agents used pepper spray and rubber bullets during clashes with protesters on Saturday.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced additional “special operations” units were being sent to Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood. The deployments echo similar federal interventions in other Democratic-run cities, including Los Angeles and Washington, DC. Separately, a federal judge in Oregon temporarily blocked Trump’s administration from deploying the National Guard in Portland, citing concerns over the justification for such a move.
