Latter-day Saints Raise Over $250,000 for Michigan Church Gunman’s Family

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have remarkably raised over $250,000 for the family of the man who carried out a deadly attack on one of their churches in Michigan just days ago.
Thomas Sanford is believed to have driven a truck into the Grand Blanc church during a Sunday worship service, opened fire, and started a massive blaze, killing four people before being fatally shot by police. The attack has left communities grieving across the US.
David Butler, a Latter-day Saint from Utah, initiated the fundraiser for Sanford’s widow and children, citing the family’s impending financial hardship and psychological trauma, exacerbated by one of Sanford’s sons facing serious ongoing medical challenges. As of Thursday, the campaign on GiveSendGo had rapidly accumulated more than a quarter of a million dollars.
Many donors, identifying themselves as Latter-day Saints, have left messages of support and compassion. However, the fundraiser has also drawn criticism online.
