Second Detainee Dies After Dallas ICE Facility Shooting, Family Mourns Loss

A second detainee injured in last week’s shooting at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas has died. Miguel Ángel García-Hernández was removed from life support following the September 24 attack, a LULAC national spokesperson and ICE confirmed. His death brings the total fatalities from the incident to two.
García-Hernández, 31, a Mexican national, passed away at 12:48 a.m. CT on Monday. His passing follows that of Norlan Guzmán-Fuente, 37, from El Salvador, who also succumbed to his injuries. A third detainee, Jose Andres Bordones-Molina of Venezuela, was also among those shot, though details on his condition were not provided.
The shooter, identified as Joshua Jahn, was found deceased at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Dallas police reported that no ICE officers were harmed during the incident.
Stephany Gauffeny, García-Hernández’s wife, shared a poignant statement through LULAC: “My husband Miguel was a good man, a loving father, and the provider for our family. His death is a senseless tragedy that has left our family shattered. I do not know how to explain to our children that their father is gone.” The family, who had recently bought their first home, was expecting their fifth child.
An ICE spokesperson offered condolences, noting that the tragedy “underscores the terrible cost of dangerous rhetoric and violence against the men and women of ICE who are simply carrying out their sworn law enforcement mission.” The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) previously stated that officers encountered an active shooter targeting immigration officials upon arriving at the Dallas Field Office.
