Madagascar President Dissolves Government Amid Deadly Youth Protests, Seeks New Premier

Madagascar’s President, Andry Rajoelina, has dissolved his government following widespread youth-led protests across the Indian Ocean island nation. The demonstrations, sparked by severe water and power cuts, have reportedly led to at least 22 deaths and over 100 injuries, according to UN figures, although the Malagasy foreign ministry disputes these numbers.
The protests, which began last week and intensified with further marches in the capital Antananarivo, represent the most significant challenge to Rajoelina’s leadership since his re-election in 2023. Thousands, many dressed in black, have taken to the streets, chanting for the president’s resignation. Security forces have responded with teargas and rubber bullets, leading to further casualties.
In a televised address on state broadcaster Televiziona Malagasy, President Rajoelina acknowledged the public’s anger and apologized for the government’s shortcomings. “I understand the anger, the sadness, and the difficulties caused by power cuts and water supply problems. I heard the call, I felt the suffering, I understood the impact on daily life,” he stated.
The president announced that applications for a new prime minister would be accepted over the next three days, paving the way for the formation of a new government. He also expressed a desire for dialogue with young people and pledged support for businesses affected by looting during the unrest.
These protests draw inspiration from recent youth movements in Kenya and Nepal, with Malagasy demonstrators adopting similar online organizational tactics and even a flag design. Madagascar, one of the world’s poorest nations, has a history of popular uprisings, including the 2009 events that first brought Rajoelina to power in a coup.
