Consumers nationwide are urged to check their freezers following an urgent recall of approximately 58 million pounds of corn dogs and sausage-on-a-stick products. The U.S. Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall due to potential wood pieces embedded in the batter, leading to multiple reported consumer injuries.

The recall, initiated by Texas-based Hillshire Brands, a subsidiary of Tyson Foods, affects select “State Fair Corn Dogs on a Stick” and “Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick” products. The issue was discovered after Hillshire received several consumer complaints, five of which involved injuries from extraneous wooden stick pieces within the batter.

Products subject to this recall were manufactured between March 17 and just recently. The contamination source has been isolated to one facility in Haltom City, Texas. FSIS has expressed concern that many of these recalled items may still be in household refrigerators and freezers, as well as in schools and other institutions, having been sold online, to retailers, school districts, and Defense Department facilities.

Consumers who have purchased the affected “State Fair Corn Dogs on a Stick” or “Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick” are strongly advised to dispose of them immediately or return them to the place of purchase. To identify recalled products, consumers should look for an establishment number of “EST-582” or “P-894” printed on the packaging, in addition to checking product names and “use by” dates as published by FSIS and Tyson.
