BEIRUT – A year ago today, on September 27, 2024, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in a series of Israeli strikes, marking a pivotal moment in the escalating conflict between Israel and the terror group. His son, Jawad Nasrallah, recently reflected on his father’s final days, revealing the Hezbollah chief was consumed by rage following Israel’s devastating pager strike on his members.

The pager detonations, which killed dozens and maimed thousands, and Nasrallah’s subsequent killing, were the initial blows in an Israeli assault that ultimately decimated much of Hezbollah’s top leadership, arsenal, and border fortifications. These developments, unimaginable to many at the time, unfolded rapidly after a significant intelligence breach in Hezbollah’s communication devices.

“He was upset, angry, resentful – there was a lot of resentment and thinking, ‘How could this happen?’ He considered himself entrusted with those lives,” Jawad Nasrallah told Reuters from his father’s grave. Jawad, displaced by Israeli airstrikes, had not seen his father for three months prior to his death, describing the period as uncertain and lived “day by day.”

Nasrallah’s last televised address was on September 19, 2024. Eight days later, massive Israeli strikes obliterated an entire block in Beirut’s southern suburbs where the long-time Hezbollah leader was meeting with an Iranian general and top military commanders. “We found out on the news like everyone else. It was shocking, but we couldn’t cry – no one in the house could scream or express their feelings,” Jawad recounted, explaining the need for secrecy given their temporary living situation.

The conflict, which began shortly after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, escalated into full-scale war in September 2024. Though a US-brokered ceasefire was reached in November 2024, Israel has continued targeted airstrikes in Lebanon to prevent Hezbollah’s regrouping. The war left Hezbollah significantly weakened, followed by the toppling of its Syrian ally Bashar al-Assad, and a new Lebanese government pledging a state monopoly on arms. Despite these changes, Hezbollah has refused to disarm, a stance Jawad reiterated, stating, “Never in your fantasies or dreams.” He also shared that he continues to seek guidance from his late father.
