The UN Security Council is holding an emergency meeting today, Monday, September 22, 2025, to address recent Russian incursions into Estonian airspace. The urgent session was requested by Estonia following an incident on Friday where three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets reportedly entered its airspace over the Gulf of Finland for 12 minutes before being intercepted by NATO forces.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna condemned Russia’s actions, stating they “undermine principles vital to the security of all UN member states,” especially when committed by a permanent member of the Security Council. The Estonian Foreign Ministry described the event as a “blatant, reckless, and flagrant violation of NATO airspace” and a breach of international law.

Russia’s Defense Ministry, however, denies the allegations, asserting its jets conducted flights “in strict accordance with international rules.” Ukraine has also sought to participate in the Security Council meeting to present its perspective, highlighting what its Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the “unprecedented scale of threats posed by aggressive Russia to the stability of Europe.”

In response to the airspace violation, Estonia has also invoked NATO Article 4, a mechanism allowing a member to bring an issue of concern to the alliance’s attention. A meeting for these consultations is expected later this week. This follows a similar request last week from Poland after its airspace was violated by Russian drones and fighter jets. Separately, Swedish and German forces reported scrambling jets on Sunday to monitor a Russian IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft flying without a flight plan or radio contact over the South Baltic Sea.
