Magnitude 7.8 Earthquake Rocks Russia’s Far East, Tsunami Alerts Issued

A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka region early this Friday, triggering tsunami warnings across the Far East. The US Geological Survey (USGS) classified the tremor as an aftershock following a massive 8.8 magnitude quake that hit the area in July.
The shallow quake, occurring at a depth of 10km (6.2 miles), prompted immediate tsunami advisories for Kamchatka’s eastern coast and parts of the Kuril island chain. While waves measuring 30 to 62 centimeters (1 to 2 feet) were reported along some shores, authorities have confirmed no immediate damage. Russia’s Emergencies Ministry has placed all services on high alert.
Videos circulating on social media captured the intensity of the quake, showing buildings shaking and car alarms sounding. Although a tsunami advisory was briefly issued for parts of Alaska, it has since been lifted. Kamchatka is renowned for its high seismic activity, having experienced multiple quakes above magnitude 7.0 recently, underscoring the region’s geological volatility.
