A high-ranking Mexican congressional staffer has resigned following intense online backlash and a diplomatic warning from the United States over comments made on a major Mexican television news program regarding the murder of Turning Point USA executive director Charlie Kirk.

Salvador Ramírez, a social communications coordinator for Mexico’s ruling Morena party, faced severe criticism after appearing on Milenio, where he made what were deemed offensive remarks about Kirk, who was shot dead last Wednesday while speaking at a Utah university. Ramírez facetiously stated, “He was given a spoonful of his own chocolate. They gave a spoonful to someone who promoted the use of weapons… a political association that is of the extreme right, pro-Trump, of the most radical wing of the Republicans.” He also characterized Turning Point USA as an “anti-rights, anti-LGBT – practically anti-women – movement.”

The controversy escalated when Christopher Landau, the United States’ deputy secretary of state and former ambassador to Mexico, publicly warned on X (formerly Twitter) that “foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country,” implying potential visa revocations. Landau specifically called out Milenio for promoting such “discourse.”

In response to the mounting pressure, Milenio issued a public apology on Friday, stating it does not “promote nor accept expressions of hate, violence or disqualification.” Ramírez also released a video apology on Friday afternoon for his “very unfortunate” comments, clarifying they were his personal views. Later that evening, he officially announced his resignation from the Morena party’s parliamentary group.

This incident is part of a broader trend where individuals, including journalists, academics, and public servants, have faced professional consequences for comments made about Kirk’s death. Meanwhile, the FBI announced on Friday that Kirk’s alleged killer had been arrested after a two-day manhunt.
