Man Charged with Capital Murder in Fatal Stabbing of Retired Auburn University Professor

A Montgomery man has been arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of a retired Auburn University professor over the weekend. Harold Rashad Dabney, 28, was apprehended by Auburn Police on Sunday, following the death of Julie Gard Schnuelle, 59, in Kiesel Park.
Dr. Schnuelle, a cherished Professor Emerita from the university’s College of Veterinary Medicine, was attacked Saturday morning while walking her dog in the popular Auburn park. Her dog was later found unharmed. Police responded to a report of a deceased person in a wooded section of the park Saturday afternoon, initiating an investigation that led to Dabney’s arrest.
Dabney faces two counts of capital murder, including charges related to kidnapping and robbery. Authorities allege he stole Dr. Schnuelle’s Ford F-150 truck from the scene to flee after the assault. The park remained closed through the weekend as police gathered evidence.
Before her retirement in 2021, Dr. Schnuelle had a significant impact at Auburn University, joining the faculty in 2003 after graduating from its veterinary college. The university community has extended its sincere condolences to her family and loved ones.
