Tremonton Police Shooting: Two Officers Identified, Suspect Charged in Fatal Incident

The Tremonton-Garland Police Department has officially identified the two officers tragically killed in the line of duty during a domestic disturbance call on August 17. Sergeant Lee Sorensen, 56, and Officer Eric Estrada, 31, lost their lives after a suspect reportedly opened fire as they responded to the incident.
Sgt. Sorensen, a veteran with 17 years in law enforcement, had served 16 years with the Garland Police Department and was recently promoted to Sergeant. He was scheduled to be sworn into his new role on August 22. Officer Estrada began his career in 2017 and had joined the Tremonton Police Department earlier this year, serving as a line officer and community outreach team member.
A procession honoring both fallen officers was held on August 18, traveling from the Medical Examiner’s Office in Taylorsville north to Tremonton, bringing them to their respective funeral homes. Utah Governor Spencer Cox has ordered state flags to be flown at half-staff in their honor, stating, “We owe these heroes a debt that can never be repaid.”
During the same incident, an unidentified Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office deputy and his service dog were also struck by gunfire. The deputy has since been released from the hospital and is recovering, while the service dog is receiving veterinary care. The suspect, Ryan Michael Bate, 33, has been arrested and faces multiple charges, including two counts of capital aggravated murder.
