The Trump administration has halted $2.1 billion in Chicago infrastructure projects, including crucial transit system improvements, Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought announced. This decision, made on the third day of an ongoing U.S. government shutdown, targets two major efforts: the Red Line Extension and the Red and Purple Modernization Project.

Vought stated that the funding freeze is intended to ensure money is not used for race-based contracting. This move follows similar actions by the administration against other Democratic-led cities and states. Earlier this week, Vought revealed the Department of Transportation froze $18 billion for two New York City infrastructure projects, citing similar concerns about contracting practices. Additionally, the Department of Energy canceled nearly $8 billion in climate-related funding for 16 states, all of which supported Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.

President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers have attributed the government shutdown to Democrats in Congress. Trump previously remarked that the shutdown presented an “unprecedented opportunity” to cut funding to what he termed “Democrat Agencies.” The Department of Transportation is expected to release further information on the Chicago funding freeze soon.
