Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced he will immediately convene another special legislative session, following declarations from House Speaker Dustin Burrows and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick that the current overtime session will adjourn this Friday. The decision comes as the Legislature remains deadlocked, unable to pass any new laws, primarily due to Texas House Democrats having left the state last week.

The Democrats’ quorum break was initiated to prevent the passage of a new congressional map, which Republicans are pushing to redraw with the aim of securing additional U.S. House seats. This ongoing political standoff has brought crucial legislation to a halt, including bills intended to address the deadly Central Texas flooding over the Fourth of July weekend. Both parties have traded blame for the legislative inaction.

Governor Abbott, who possesses the sole authority to call special sessions and dictate their agendas, asserted there would be “no reprieve” for the Democrats who “abandoned their duty.” He confirmed the agenda for the upcoming special session would replicate the current one, with the potential to include additional conservative priorities. Abbott has also hinted at the possibility of proposing an even more aggressive congressional map, potentially targeting up to eight new Republican seats.
